GENAI 101 - Module 0: Welcome and Orientation

Welcome and How This Course Works

Dear participant,

Welcome to a learning experience where creativity meets technology. You are about to build generative AI (GenAI) literacy the way artists learn best: by making things. Over two modules and eight lessons you will compose songs, produce beats, score scenes, write and stage scripts, direct avatars, and choreograph movement, all with GenAI tools as your collaborators. Along the way you will learn to understand, evaluate, and ethically guide those tools rather than simply use them.

Video: Welcome to Art-Integrated GenAI Literacy. Three-minute welcome: why the course exists, how it is organized, what every lesson looks like, and how you are assessed. (Instructor: build with make_videos.py or record and embed your own.)

Why this course exists

The next generation of learners will grow up in an AI-driven world. As a future music or theater teacher, your ability to navigate, harness, and ethically guide the use of AI will shape how your students create. By building GenAI literacy now, you will:

How the course is organized

PartWhat you doTime
Module 0: OrientationSet up accounts, meet your peers, take the self-assessment45 minutes
Module 1: MusicFour lessons, each ending in a shareable audio artifact4 to 6 hours
Module 2: TheaterFour lessons, each ending in a shareable video or script artifact4 to 6 hours
Module 3: Your ClassroomDesign a lesson plan that brings one project to your students2 to 3 hours

You may complete Module 1 and Module 2 in either order. If your time is limited, complete the module closest to your teaching area first, then return for the other.

What every lesson looks like

Each lesson follows the same rhythm so you always know what comes next:

  1. Watch a short introductory video and read the lesson objectives.
  2. Learn the key ideas behind the tool and the competency the lesson targets.
  3. Do a step-by-step activity with the GenAI tool.
  4. Create a shareable digital artifact (a file or a link).
  5. Share the artifact in the lesson gallery with a rationale of no more than 75 words.
  6. Check your understanding with a short knowledge check.
  7. Reflect with two or three prompts at the end of the lesson.
